Happy Birthday, Mom

My Mom is my hero. Winnie Ann(e) Elaine George was born on May 22nd, 1953 at Markland Cottage Hospital in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. Her parents, Bob and Vivian George, raised her in Whiteway, Newfoundland, along with her older sister, Helen, older brother James, and four younger brothers, Lloyd, Robert, Darryl, and Kevin. Mom (on left) with her sister, Helen. Mom was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of eight and has devoted herself to self-care through a healthy diet and exercise all her life. She is currently using the latest version of the insulin pump, but during all my childhood took an average of three needles a day. I remember sitting down with her one day when I was in high school to try to calculate the number of needles she had actually taken in her life...I think it was around 40-50 thousand at that point! Mom’s focus on maintaining good health became more poignant for me in my teenage years when I went with her, from time to time, to attend funer

Living In Fear

I know a lot about living with fear. I would venture to say that I am somewhat of an expert at ‘living in fear.’ I have lived with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Phobia, Agoraphobia all my life, though only formally diagnosed in 1992 at the age of 20. I am ALWAYS on edge, prone to debilitating panic attacks and periods of depersonalization when my mind seems to step out of my body to become a passive observer to what is happening around me. I have used self-help books, multiple medications (currently Prozac), various doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, prayer, community and family supports, and intensive therapeutic tools such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Anger Management, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Even with all these tools and an overwhelmingly supportive family, I find myself anxious most of the time and in deep fear of everything and everyone around me on a regular basis. A Good Response?

Greetings! I was recently asked my opinion on the Anglican Church’s response to the current problems we are facing. I’ve been reading with interest the recent communiques from Anglican Church of Canada in response to the events of Donald Harvey’s departure from the Anglican Church of Canada and the Essentials Network meeting in Burlington to create an alternative ‘conservative’ Anglican Church in Canada under the authority of the Province of the Southern Cone. Here are some points I’d like to repeat and see reaffirmed: ∙ The Church has made every effort to accommodate those who have differing theological views within the current structures of the Anglican Church of Canada, including alternative pastoral care and episcopal oversight where necessary. ∙ The Church has been actively seeking to build the community of believers through open and honest dialogue, maintaining a healthy commitment to the theological diversity which makes up the Anglican mosaic. ∙ Through the use of the
